Beaverton Historical Society Quilt Show Success

“Historical Quilts of the Beaverton Community” on Saturday at the Beaverton Historical Society drew 130 quilt enthusiasts and fans. Two presentations drew persons of all ages. Some came to learn about the Oregon Trail historical quilts and others for the well regarded James Erickson quilt made by his fans, mothers of the casts of Beaverton High School musical productions and former players themselves and their families.

Mary Bywater Cross, a quilt historian and quilt artist spoke to quilters about the Oregon Trail quilts and quilting techniques. She pieced together a story of nineteenth century women’s lives through the cloth records they created. She was peppered with questions from the audience.

The Erickson quilt was loaned by the James Erickson Foundation. It drew attendees who hadn’t seen the quilt in more than 10 years and enthusiastically embraced the memories of 28 musicals produced by Mr. Erickson including “42nd Street”, “Hello Dolly”, “The King and I” and more. Tears were shed as the players and stage mother’s recalled their theatrical adventures and reviewed a DVD of the presentation of the quilt to Erickson before he passed away.   (Written by BHS member, Lana Nelson)
