February Presentation

Aloha Historical Society and Beaverton Historical Society are pleased to bring you February's presentation. Kami Horton of OPB will be speaking on the topic of Oregon's poor farms.

Oregon once required counties to take care of its poorest residents. For decades, relief institutions, known as "poor farms", operated throughout the state. They provided food, shelter, medical care, and sometimes burial services. The treatment of residents varied widely, with some poor farms providing refuge for those in need while others operated like prisons. OPB's series "Oregon Experience" half hour documentary "Oregon's County Poor Farms" examines this often-forgotten history.
